Originally, known as the Mandalorian Crusaders, under the leadership of Mandalore the Resurrector, they were the surviving members of the Mandalorian Overlords and the Death Watch.

After the death of Alpha-02, at the hands of Ailyn Vel, the Mandalore Crusaders returned to Concord Dawn in search of a new leader.

At the end of the Galactic Civil War, Boba Fett journeyed to Concord Dawn in the hopes of finding a new home, the Mandalorians had found their new leader.

Under Boba Fett, the Protectors initially chose to ally with the Yuuzhan Vong in the first months of the Yuuzhan Vong War, under the lure of the immense amount of credits offered by the invaders. To this end, Fett initiated a brutal training regimen for his forces on Raxus Prime, killing many of them. Fett, however, fully expected the Yuuzhan Vong to break their word, and used his place to feed information to the New Republic. By the last year of the war, the Protectors had switched sides, possibly due to the end of Vong payment or an attack on Mandalore, and fought at several worlds in the Outer Rim Territories.

Years after the Yuuzhan Vong War, Boba Fett began trainning his granddaughter, Mirta Gev, as his replacement as Mandalore.
